NCLEX Spanish phrase review: must-know patient-safety moments
NCLEX tests safety judgment. On the unit, Spanish moments are safety moments: allergies, changes, emergencies, and the interpreter call.
The Spanish on this page comes from the Signos phrase library, which has not been checked by a qualified reviewer yet. Vocabulary practice does not qualify you to interpret. When a conversation affects care, use a qualified medical interpreter.
NCLEX does not test Spanish vocabulary directly. It tests the judgment underneath it: what to ask first, what to report, what never to assume. The Spanish moments below are the same moments, in a second language.
Each moment is a safety decision before it is a language exercise. Ask about allergies before medicines. Report changes the moment they appear. Call for help first in an emergency. Call the interpreter whenever the conversation affects care.
Ask about allergies before medicines
Allergy questions come before medicine statements, every time. A medicine given on partial understanding is a safety event waiting to happen. Ask, wait for the answer, and never confirm a medicine, dose, schedule, or allergy on a guess.
«¿Es alérgico a algún medicamento?»
Are you allergic to any medications?
Patient reply: «No, ninguna alergia.» No, no allergies.
Note: Do not rely on partial understanding to confirm a medicine, dose, schedule, or allergy. Pause and contact the nurse; use a qualified medical interpreter.
Drill Pain Assessment →«Le voy a dar medicina para el dolor.»
I am going to give you medicine for the pain.
Patient reply: «Gracias. ¿Cuánto va a tardar?» Thank you. How long will it take?
Note: Do not rely on partial understanding to confirm a medicine, dose, schedule, or allergy. Pause and contact the nurse; use a qualified medical interpreter.
Drill Pain Assessment →Report changes the moment they appear
Pain that worsens, pain that changes, pain that wakes a patient at night: each one is a report, not a reassurance. Tell the patient to tell you, and then report what they told you, exactly as they said it.
«Avíseme si el dolor empeora.»
Tell me if the pain gets worse.
Patient reply: «Sí, le aviso.» Yes, I will let you know.
Note: Report the patient's answer and any new or worsening symptom to the nurse. Do not infer a diagnosis or urgency from this phrase alone.
Drill Pain Assessment →«Avíseme si el dolor cambia de cualquier manera.»
Tell me if the pain changes in any way.
Patient reply: «Le aviso si cambia.» I will tell you if it changes.
Note: Report the patient's answer and any new or worsening symptom to the nurse. Do not infer a diagnosis or urgency from this phrase alone.
Drill Pain Assessment →«¿El dolor lo despierta en la noche?»
Does the pain wake you up at night?
Patient reply: «Sí, anoche me despertó dos veces.» Yes, it woke me up twice last night.
Note: Report the patient's answer and any new or worsening symptom to the nurse. Do not infer a diagnosis or urgency from this phrase alone.
Drill Pain Assessment →Emergency words, in order
In an emergency the order is fixed: call for help, keep the patient safe, ask the one question that matters most. Language does not slow this down when the phrases are drilled. It speeds it up.
«Pida ayuda, ahora.»
Call for help, now.
Note: Do not promise help or a return time unless it is realistic. Make sure the patient knows how to request help and follow unit procedure.
Drill Emergency Phrases →«Necesito ayuda en este cuarto.»
I need help in this room.
Note: Do not promise help or a return time unless it is realistic. Make sure the patient knows how to request help and follow unit procedure.
Drill Emergency Phrases →«¿Puede respirar?»
Can you breathe?
Note: Report the patient's answer and any new or worsening symptom to the nurse. Do not infer a diagnosis or urgency from this phrase alone.
Drill Emergency Phrases →Practice the judgment, not just the words
Words without judgment fail at patient speed. The case questions on Signos practice the other half: given this patient, this answer, and this moment, what do you do next. Study the words in the library, then test the judgment in the cases.
