Question 1
What makes an interpreter qualified?
Under 45 CFR 92.4, a qualified interpreter has been assessed for proficiency in both languages, can interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially using necessary specialized vocabulary, and adheres to interpreter ethics, including confidentiality. Many hold national certification through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.
Qualification is a property of a person in a role, not a compliment. A fluent colleague is a fluent colleague; an interpreter is a professional with a defined standard of practice.
